“Your pet – one of the family” was the core theme of last years national pet week, which ran from Saturday April 29th – Sunday 7th May 2006. We’ll be bringing you all the pet news during 2007 pet week, but in the meantime we wanted to share some interesting facts and figures about owning a pet with you:

- 83 percent of GPs in a nationwide survey said that owning a pet helps keep you healthy and 63 percent suggested that pets keep us fit

- Ownership of exotic pets is becoming increasingly popular

- Pet owners often have more than one dog or cat

- Of the 24.6 million households in the UK, more than 50 percent own a pet

- There are approximately 6.5 million dogs in the UK

-

- 90 percent of seven to eight year olds listed pets in their top 10 special relationships

-

- 80 percent of the elderly say that pets offer unconditional love and prevent loneliness – compared to 67 percent of younger pet owners.
