Well not you of course – we’re talking about your cat or dog.

-

Estimates suggest that around 80% of dogs and cats over the age of three require dental treatment. Tragically this is being missed or overlooked by their owners because unlike us, pets are considerably less likely to display signs of mouth pain. Even careful owners who ensure that their pet attends regular check ups with their vet are unaware of the importance and need to look after their cat or dog’s teeth.

-

If you’ve ever suffered from tooth problems yourself, you’ll know just how painful this can be. In addition, to bad breath, pets can potentially loose teeth and bacteria spread through the bloodstream can cause problems for the heart, liver, kidneys and blood. Our pets can’t tell us if they have tooth problems and rely on us to identify the signs and ensure that we look after their oral health.

-

Vets are doing their best to educate cat and dog owners about the importance of looking after their pets oral health and well being. This work has been supported by the annual Pet Smile Month (usually in September) that is sponsored by Royal Canin, Pedigree Dentastix and Petplan.

-

Regularly brushing your pets’ teeth is the main way their dental problems can be prevented. Specially designed toothbrushes are available as are pet toothpastes that come in meat flavours which pets will enjoy (Note: Do not use human toothpaste which contains minerals which if swallowed may cause problems).

-

The usual brushing techniques apply – using a soft brush, gently brush down below the gum line to prevent the build up of plaque and hard calculus. Dried foods rather than softer moist foods will help to keep your pets teeth clean, as will specialist dental chews and toys.
