There have been calls for changes to the current laws on dog ownership as the number of dog attacks increase in the UK. According to the RSPCA, dog attacks were up by nearly 50% from last year, and they suggest that this is partly due to the increase in ownership of so-called prestige dogs such as Staffordshire bull terriers and Rottweilers, but mainly because of the lack of knowledge by owners of how to care for them appropriately. In particular campaigners are requesting for stricter laws to prosecute owners if the attack happens in a private place.

Current laws do not allow for authorities to automatically prosecute if the dog attack takes place on private property, and it is in these environments that more attacks take place. To ensure that dog attacks decrease, campaigners are also asking for dog ownership databases – at the moment, anyone can own a dog (unless they have a previous conviction that prevents them from owning one).
-
They are also asking for more training courses for dog owners. Owners often joke that their pet dog is ‘like a child’ to them, and its true to say that like any child they need to be raised in a way that ensures they understand what is right from wrong. Rottweiler or Staffordshire Bull Terrier Dog breeders agree that a dog is a product of its environment – so they aren’t an ‘aggressive’ breed as such, it’s just that their upbringing can encourage them to be aggressive.
