Rabbits are the most abused domestic pet in England and Wales, with 35,000 abandoned every year, the RSPCA has said. - Talking on the BBC, David Boules, from the RSPCA, said that many people are keeping rabbits on their own in a hutch all day with no social stimulation. He suggests that they are sociable animals and need companionship. For those succumbing to the pester power of children’s demands for their first pet, a rabbit seems like the ideal solution. But they are not a toy; they are an animal and need to be treated as such. - They live for 8 years and cost about £8000 to keep (i.e. food, a hutch, neutering and vet bills etc). Rabbits need a hutch that is large enough for them to move around in, but they also need some outside space, with grass and places for them to scratch around and dig. - Unfortunately, the RSPCA is seeing a growing stray rabbit population, as people who no longer wish to look after their pet, release them in the wild. Many of these domesticated rabbit breeds, will unfortunately die, whereas others will be rescued and reported to the RSPCA, looked after and be re-homed.
