When you're out walking your dog, an alternative to his / her toy is the stick from a fallen branch, but vets are warning dog owners to take care when using these and other readily available objects, such as plastic bottles, on their walks.
-
Throwing something for your dog to retrieve on a walk is really good fun and increases the amount of exercise a dog gets. Talking a ball or other toy with you is the best option, but these can get lost – and we all know what its like to lose our favourite toy. Vets see a number of injuries relating to play with these objects not designed for dogs that has resulted in facial injuries, throat damage if the dog catches the item awkwardly and problems arising from the swallowing of bottle tops.
-
Some suggest that the danger can be reduced by ensuring that the stick is free of splinters or the plastic bottle top is removed, and the throwing technique is adjusted. Instead of throwing it in the air so the dog has to jump or catch it in mid air, throw it low to the ground aiming for it to land flat before the dog reaches the stick to retrieve it.
