England finally caught up with other parts of the UK today by implementing the smokefree law. This will mean that virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England will be smokefree. - A fantastic development in public health, but some commentators are worried that this law could put pets’ health at greater risk as smokers retreat to their homes and bring smoking indoors. - The effects of passive smoking (second-hand inhalation of a smokers cigarette fumes) are well document for humans, but many are unaware of the serious health risks to pets. Research suggests that cats exposed to second-hand smoke are twice as likely to develop feline lymphoma – a type of cancer that can be fatal. Cigarette smoke is also one of the most common causes of respiratory allergies in cats. It can make them sneeze, cough and wheeze. Dogs are also affected in similar ways to cats, and tobacco smoke has been linked to nasal and sinus cancers. - Our other pet friends are also affected by human cigarette smoking. Hair loss in pets such as hamsters and guinea pigs has been attributed to inhalation of second-hand smoke. - Pets are unable to tell us if cigarette smoke is affecting them, but prolonged exposure to smoke will cause health problems, by which time it may be too late. - If you’re a smoker ensure that the room is well ventilated or try smoking away from your pets – if you have a dog, why not take them on a walk whilst you have a smoke? - For more information about stopping smoking contact your local GP, or contact NHS direct who offer free support and advice. Further information and avice about the smoking ban can be found on the Smokefree England site. - Add as favourites (0) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 322
