Shocking and upsetting figures by the RSPCA reveal that pet cruelty and mistreatment of pets in the UK is on the rise. The charity reported a 34 percent increase in convictions for cruelty to dogs, 15 percent increase for cats and even a rise in cruelty to pet rats. However, there was some good news – the charity reported that cruelty to horses increased by 13 percent a reduction of 33 per cent from last year.

Paul Tranter, a dog breeder in Staffordshire, told My Pet Friends that “pets are fast becoming the victims of our throwaway society, with the credit crunch affecting people’s ability to look after them, people are just discarding them or neglecting their needs, rather than asking for help and support”

RSPCA inspectors were called out to deal with 498,999 animals in 2007, and the charity handled almost 1.2 million calls resulting in 165,720 rescues and collections.

The increase in figures has been attributed to the new Animal Welfare Act which was introduced last year. The act gives more powers to rescue charity inspectors such as those at the RSPCA and sent out a very powerful message about animal cruelty and neglect. The Act makes owners and keepers legally responsibility for the care and welfare of their animals.
