New law for pet owners to ‘take reasonable steps to ensure welfare’ of their animals - The Government's Animal Welfare act which will come into force on 28 March in Wales and on Friday 6 April in England, provides much greater protection for animals and imposes new regulations on pet owners to take 'reasonable steps to ensure welfare' of their animals.
- It is now an offence - with a possible jail term of up to a year and/or a £5,000 fine - to fail to provide a cat, dog, rabbit or other family pet with a 'suitable environment, a suitable diet, the ability to express normal behaviour, the need to be housed with or apart from other animals, and freedom from pain, suffering, injury and disease'. - The RSPCA comments that the majority of pet owners will not need to change the way they care for their animals to comply with the new law - most people already provide for their pet's needs. But the new law will help to tackle cases of ongoing neglect. - The Bill will ban all mutilations of animals, including tail docking of poodles and other show dogs, though working dogs would be exempt from the ban. - For more information about looking after your pet, take a look at Kitty and Teddy’s Tips, or visit the RSPCA website that has a very useful pet care section.
