In a recent My Pet Friends poll 62% of users voting suggested they would use holistic medicine to treat their pet. So, just what is holistic medicine and is it suitable for you and your pet.

-

Holistic approaches to animal health care involves treating animals with herbal remedies rather than using traditional medicines. Holistic approaches to health care are not new, in fact they were around well before modern medicine and it is only in recent years that holistic approaches to health care for us humans has become fashionable once again. So, it’s no wonder that people recognising the benefits of such treatments for themselves would soon demand them for their pets.

-

Over the years some people have become disillusioned by conventional medicines finding that some treatments are not ideal for some problems and can cause additional side effects. They have turned to holistic medicine, finding that these alternatives, derived from natural products such as burdock and stinging nettles, are less harsh forms of treatment but still provide similar results. But if we broaden the definition to include other alternative therapies, we’ve probably all heard of hydrotherapy to assist pets with muscular or joint problems. However, unlike traditional medicine which is heavily tested and relies on scientifically proven techniques, some holistic therapies have been criticised for their lack of evidence base and scientific rigour when it comes to testing a treatments safety.

The choice is the pet owners, and if you’ve tried everything else to get rid of your cat’s unexplained rash or your dog’s mysterious loss of fur, why not give them a go. There aren’t many holistic practitioners who offer homeopathy, chiropractic treatments or acupuncture, so perhaps take a look at the My Pet Friends pet directory under vets or alternative therapies, or place a request on our message board to find one near you.

If you offer holistic treatments for pets, please list your services for FREE on the MyPetFriends.co.uk site and we’ll update this article to include your details.
