More pets affected by Credit Crunch PDF Print E-mail

The credit crunch means that most of us have to tighten our belts as money isn’t going as far as it did a year ago. But our pets are also starting to feel the crunch as more reports this week suggest that pets are being abandoned because owners can’t afford to keep them.

Birmingham dog’s home reports that about 300 animals were being handed into them each month – compared to 250 this time last year. And, the animal charity PDSA has seen a 10% increase in people applying for help with vets’ bills.

Increasing food prices are one reason, with dog and cat food prices rising by around 25% over the past year. But veterinary surgery bills are also on the increase – despite reports that show that vets have the fastest growing incomes for small businesses in the UK.
