German T-mobile team cyclist Marcus Burghardt spend months training for the arduous mountain climbs and tortuous distances of the Tour de France, only to have his chances of winning dashed yesterday by a Labrador that casually saunters onto the road and directly into his path.
-
Dramatic video images showed Burghardt, unable to swerve around the dog, hitting it with the front wheel of his carbon fibre bike. The front wheel collapsed on impact sending the rider crashing over the handlebars and onto the poor dog.
-
Remarkably, the dog and rider were unhurt. The dog simply got up wagged its tail and began to wader off – but was grabbed by a spectator to prevent it from interrupting the paths of any of the other cyclists. Burghardt suffered a few cuts and bruises and after quickly changing his wheel was back on his way.
-
The 159.5km ninth stage was eventually won by Soler Hernandez. The Labrador continued to wander about as Labradors do – unaware of the global attention he is receiving.
