As temperatures reach their highest this year, pet owners are reminded to look after their pets in the heat. In some cases, to apply suncream to their pets before they take them out. Read more for pet tips and pet advice.

Pets with bald patches or thinning hair need that extra protection from the sun, and can get sunburnt just as humans can. By applying a high factor non-toxic waterproof human sunblock, or one designed specifically for pets, to these areas, pets can be protected. Areas such as ears and noses are the main areas of concern, as are dogs with white hair and bare patches of fur (a dog’s underbelly for example).

Heatstroke, sunburn and dehydration are common cases when the heat rises – so make sure your pets have plenty of water. Do not leave a dog in a hot car – even for a short while - as temperatures can rise in minutes, and keep dogs out of the sun between the hottest part of the day. Another way to help dogs keep cool is to ensure that long haired pets are well groomed – a tangle-free coat will allow for cool air to circulate freely and give your dog some relief from the heat.

If you’re looking for suncream for pets, or other pet products this summer, take a look at what the pet shops and pet stores have to offer in the My Pet Friends Pet Directory.
