 Researchers in Germany have found that having a furry pet at home whilst young people are growing up could reduce their chances of developing allergies. - - The study looked at 9,000 children aged six and under and found that having a pet dog made you less sensitive to the causes of allergies like asthma, eczema and hay fever. The theory is that if you have a furry pet you are exposed to germs on the animal’s fur at an early stage and therefore your body gradually learns to cope with these germs and develops a stronger immune system to fight against them. - Interestingly, the effect was not seen in children who had frequent contact with dogs but did not have one at home. - If after reading this article you have been encouraged to get a cat or a dog – please read Kitty and Teddy’s pet care tips page on looking after pets and getting your first pet; speak to other pet owners or chat to staff in your local pet store.
