A £50 cup of coffee is being served up at uber posh Peter Jones Department store on the London’s Kings Road but its not just any old coffee – its actually brewed from the faecaes of the Asian palm civet cat.
-
Kopi Luwak, is the most expensive coffee in the world, retailing for around £324 a kilo, with only 260kg harvested a year.
-
The coffee originates from the forests of Indonesia, where the Asian palm civet cat’s diet consists of only the ripest coffee berries. The cats digest the flesh of the fruit, leaving the bean, and in the process it is thought that enzymes in their stomachs break down the proteins that make coffee so bitter.
-
People who have tried it say that it has a smooth, yet rich and slightly sweet taste – sounds gorgeous. But what we want to know is who originally thought of using the cats poo for a brew?
