The charity blames the increase on our "throwaway society", and exposed some of the astonishing excuses that owners use, including a cat given away because she didn't match the new carpet, and a dog who was unwanted because "she hurts my legs when she wags her tail".

The My Pet Friends team and our readers were shocked to read the various reasons people gave when they were caught ‘dumping’ their unwanted pets. Our virtual pets – Kitty and Teddy – will be re-launching their blog in June and their motto “A pet is a life - not a toy or a fashion accessory” is quite apt here. If you’re considering getting a cat or a dog – please read Kitty and Teddy’s pet care tips on looking after pets and getting your first pet; speak to other pet owners or chat to staff in your local pet store. Be a responsible pet owner and give this duty full and careful consideration – remember, “a pet is a life - not a toy or a fashion accessory”.
