Before 1987 dog owners used to have to have a licence, now there are moves for all 6.8 million dogs in Britain to be registered under plans for a new registration scheme.
-
Under plans released by the RSPCA, all dogs may soon have to have a dog licence. This new form of dog registration would entail county authorities running a dog database, where all animals are licensed, insured and micro chipped. This will greatly assist local authorities who took on the responsibility for strays from the Police as of the 6th April 2008.
-
Supporters of the registration scheme argue that this ensures that tax payers do not have to foot bill for careless dog owners. Others argue that legislation needs to target irresponsible dog owners and not just responsible dog owners.
-
Whatever is decided, its clear that something needs to be done especially as we are seeing an increase in status dogs – such as Rottweilers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers and the increase in stray and abused dogs.
