Dog gets married…to a man! PDF Print E-mail

Earlier this year we brought you news about the UK pet service offering wedding ceremonies for pets and their owners (click here for full story), well, a man in Tamil Nadu, a southern state in India has recently married his neighbours’ dog to lift a curse that he believes was placed on him.
-
33 year old P. Selvakumar married his dog bride – Selvi (who belongs to his neighbour) to remove a curse that a soothsayer says was placed on him since he stoned a pair of stray dogs to death when he was a teenager. In a lavish Hindu wedding, the dog was draped in beautiful garments and adorned with gifts of garlands and jewellery.
-
The wedding was witnessed by over 200 guests, who brought gifts for the couple from pet shops as well as more traditional stores. Hindu mythology and religion is full of stories in which animals and humans are afforded equal respect; Hindus believe in reincarnation – the belief that once we die our souls are re-born and we may come back as animals and vice-versa. The ‘mock’ wedding between Selvakumar and Selvi is an example of the great respect Hindus have for animals.
