China operates one of the last communist regimes in the world and still holds many secrets that are increasingly becoming known to us in the west. It is a frequently cited myth that cats and dogs were being bred for human consumption in China – a myth that is increasingly reported to be a reality.
-
In recent years, China has been criticised for its near lack of respect for animal rights and in particular the growing trade in cats and dogs for their fur and meat. The country's rising affluence has brought with it a pet-pampering middle class who are organizing and staging protests against this trade.
-
China’s nascent animal rights movement rescued more than 400 cats that were about to be slaughtered for their fur and meat last week. Around the same time, over 100 supporters of the "Love Kitty" group in Tianjin surrounded a market, where cats and dogs were being slaughtered. Many of the protesters were local people who had lost their pets and suspected the animals had been abducted by furriers.
-
The police refused to support the animal protection group because all the animal traders were licensed. There is no law in China against killing cats and dogs.
