Scientists in the United States have announced a bizarre new way of fighting the war on terror. Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico claim that they have trained honey bees to recognise explosives – and that the insects could be used to identify bombs of all kinds.
-
Researchers in the programme have successfully trained bees to recognise many kinds of incendiary devices, including those used by suicide bombers.
-
The bees alert their handlers to the presence of explosives by sticking out their proboscis. The Laboratory predict that the bees could be used by police, the military and airport security staff, who would carry the insects in hand-held boxes. They hope that the bees will be called to serve both in the homeland war on terror and in Iraq.

Says research scientist research scientist Tim Haarmann: “It would be great to start saving some lives with this.”
