Good news for rabbit owners – next week is the first National Rabbit Week. The event, which begins on Monday 22nd January, will highlight the increase in rabbit obesity and teeth problems caused by inappropriate diet, and give the owners of Britain’s third most popular pet advice on keeping those little critters happy and healthy. - A shocking 80 per cent of pet rabbits, that’s an estimated 1.6 million animals in the UK alone, are not fed the correct diet. - Specialist rabbit vet John ‘Bugs’ Brown: “Feeding the right food is the most important thing you can do for your rabbit. The majority of illnesses and dental problems are caused by poor diet.” Surprisingly, rabbits eat more than just carrots: fresh fruit and veg, such as brocolli, apple cores and – yes, you guessed it – carrots should make up only 20 per cent of your rabbits diet, the remainder being made up of hay or grass and a dried, mixed food. Comments ‘Bugs’ Brown: “You’d be surprised how many obese rabbits get brought into my surgery who have been fed on a diet of burgers, fast food chicken and pizza. Absolute madness.” - To help combat these bad diet habits, and to educate rabbit owners about the best way care for their pets, vets around the country will be running free Happy Hopper MOT health checks. And if you don’t own a rabbit yourself, there’s no need to feel left out: British Food Fortnight runs from 22nd September to 7th October 2007, so there’s plenty of time to practise some delicious rabbit recipes.
