• Carefully plan your trip to make the necessary arrangements, we advise you get started with these at least 8-12 months before you plan to travel.
• You will firstly need to get your pet micro chipped and vaccinated
against rabies.
• Three weeks later, a blood sample will need to be taken and if all is well and the vaccine has taken, the pet will be issued with a passport.

• You can take your pet out of the UK anytime after this, but it may not return until six months after the blood sample was taken.
• Some countries will require additional certificates, so check with DEFRA or your vet before you plan your holiday with your pet.
• All pets are required to receive tick and tapeworm treatment 24-48 hours before they return to the UK and these must be administered by an official vet with documentation as evidence.
• To keep the passport up to date your pet will need regular booster vaccinations.
• Specialist pet travel companies can assist you with these plans as well as providing advice about airline regulations, suitable travel carriers and cages. Find one in the My Pet Friends business directory.
• Ensure you have the correct pet carrier so that your pet can be safely transported. You can find pet carriers and other pet travel products in your local pet shop or on online pet shops in the My Pet Friends business directory.
