Alternative and complementary medicine – the umbrella disciplines in which the practice of homeopathy is located within – are deeply contested and debated areas in health care, for humans but even more so for pets. Homeopathic remedies have become increasingly popular as people look for alternative ways of treating ailments that conventional medicine has been unable to treat, feels more natural and / or have few or none of the unwanted side effects associated with some conventional medicines. In the UK, the increase in the use of homeopathic treatments has been noticeable; in other parts of the world such as India, homeopathy has been a long established tradition with junior doctors being given the option to specialise in homeopathy.

Homeopathy versus Conventional Treatments for Pet Care
Homeopathy differs from conventional drug-related treatments by using raw extracts from plants or animals, or by using powders of minerals and salts that are made into a ‘tincture’ and mixed with alcohol before application. They have mainly been used with cats and dogs to treat skin conditions such as eczema, to treat breathing conditions and to treat ailments such as arthritis. The homeopath will look at the whole person, rather than isolating one condition, recognising that symptoms may be the result of underlying problems.

Does it Work?
Homeopathic remedies work by giving patients a tiny dose of something that causes symptoms similar to those that they are already experiencing. The theory is that a minute quantity of something that causes a symptom will stimulate the bodies own healing powers without side effects. However, it directly challenges the science of medicine which suggests the stronger the medicine the more powerful it becomes. It has also been strongly criticised by the medical profession who argue that the treatments merely provide a placebo effect, and fail to provide adequate results under clinical trials. Supporters counter this argument by showing where the treatments have worked with pets, and young children – moreover, homeopathy is recognised by the World Health Organisation as the second largest therapeutic system in the world.

Not new
This is not a new discipline – it was refined by Dr Samuel Hahnemann around 200 years ago, and you may already know of some ‘homeopathic’ remedies without realising that they were labelled as homeopathy. For example, people with hay fever find that eating honey, that is collected from the local area, helps relieve their hay fever symptoms – the honey contains small quantities of what brings on their allergic reactions and gradually the body learns that these are safe and not to react to these.

Kitty & Teddy’s Pet Care Guide – Homeopathy for Your Pet
• Find out more information about conventional medicine and homeopathic medicine before making a decision to use treatments. Speak to your vet and speak to a homeopath.
• You can buy homeopathic remedies over the counter from online and high street pet shops, but these should be purchased with care; seek professional advice before purchasing and using them on your cat or dog.
• Find a suitable homeopath that specialises in pet care – find a pet homeopath on the My Pet Friends Pet Business Directory, or find a registered homeopath on the Society of Homeopaths web page www.homeopathy-soh.org who may specialise in pet homeopathy.
• Don’t expect an immediate result; homeopathy has an accumulative effect, so treatment time may take much longer.
• Your pet should continue to take conventional medicine at the same time as any homeopathy remedies; do not discontinue taking conventional medicines that have been prescribed by a vet for your pet before speaking to your vet and gaining appropriate advice.
