What a beautiful day – and about time too – just what we all needed after what seems like a lifetime of rain and generally miserable weather. So, seeing as its a Bank Holiday weekend and we needed a well earned break from My Pet Friends with its fantastic range of pet shops, pet accessories and listings in the pet directory, we thought we’d take the opportunity to visit Oscar. Oscar’s a rescued donkey that lives in the Birmingham donkey sanctuary. Our owners are mad about donkeys so adopted him last year. He lives with 19 of his friends and was really happy to see us – we could tell because he gave us a flick of his ears and swished his tail – probably because we had ginger biscuits and polo mints for him. - Donkeys are fantastic animals – the donkeys at the donkey sanctuary are so calm and love to meet their visitors. We met Oscar’s other donkey friends that included Pedro, Pinocchio, Donk, and Moses; and learnt that the donkey sanctuary does lots of work in the community to raise awareness of donkeys. They also work with children from the local area who have special needs. By allowing them to ride the donkeys they develop a bond with the animals that aid their emotional and intellectual development. - We also learnt how the donkey got its cross on its back. Yes, if you’ve ever met a donkey you’ll have noticed that they have a line across their shoulders and one across their back, that intersects to form a cross. Well, legend has it that the donkey was brought to carry Jesus to Jerusalem. When Jesus was crucified a week later, the little donkey who loved Jesus so much offered to help carry the cross, but was pushed away. Following the crucifixion when all had left, the shadow of the cross was cast along the shoulders of the donkey, and there it remained as a tribute to the loyalty and love of a little donkey. - After seeing Oscar we went and had a picnic in the park. Great place to spend with our owners’ nieces and nephews – we ran, skipped and generally played about – happy memories that we’ll never forget. - ![]() - Add as favourites (0) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 345
