Fireworks – well we don’t want to be kill joys, but Teddy and I are not fans, and neither are many other pets. Now don’t boo and hiss at us all at once – please hear us out first.

Thinking about fireworks sends shivers down my spine. That all too familiar whistle followed by a loud bang makes me run for cover under the nearest cushion or duvet and makes Teddy huff, puff, howl and bark. Poor Teddy, he gets so stressed he doesn’t know what he’s doing and often takes his anger out on his toys, cushions and whatever else is close at paw. Our owners won’t even go near him as he has … dare I even say it….been known to bite (sorry Teddy, I know you won’t like me telling our readers, but you know it’s true)

With Diwali (the Hindu festival of light) and Guy Fawkes Night (the annual celebration of the failure of the plot to blow up the houses of parliament) being celebrated by millions of people across the UK over the next few weeks, pets like us, and our owners, are bracing ourselves for nights of anxiety and worry.
-
Discussions about banning fireworks occur on a yearly basis, and judging by the reports in the news and press, this year is no different. When you hear about the horrific injuries humans sustain through using fireworks incorrectly, and about helpless cats who have suffered horrific burns at the hands of monstrous people who think it’s funny to tie a rocket or banger to their tail – it seems like a sensible idea to ban the public sale of fireworks. In fact, there are so many organised events across the country and you get a whole lot more for your money, that we can’t see the need for the private sale of fireworks at all.
-
Whatever your thoughts and whatever you’re doing to celebrate, have a safe time and do think about the animals. If your pet finds it difficult to get through these times have a word with your vet who may be able to suggest ways to overcome or suppress the feelings.
