Remember Remember Your Pet In November
Written by MyPetFriends

firework.jpgWith Guy Fawkes Night & Diwali soon approaching, Petplan, is ensuring that our furry friends are properly cared for, during what can potentially be a distressing time for them.
-

Although Guy Fawkes Night celebrations are loved by many, they can cause havoc to pets across the country, in-fact a survey by the pet insurer reveals that 79% of cat and dog owners think that all loud fireworks should be banned. This view was shared by 80% of vets who participated in the survey.
-

However, Petplan’s Vet of the Year, Mike Hewitt, explains that  a lot of the stress and injury caused by fireworks can be reduced through simple measures. “Injuries to pets due to fireworks are usually caused as a result of their panic – either running away or being damaged in an attempt to escape the noise and flashes”, says Mike.
-

“Pets have become accustomed to a comparatively quiet life and any change in that routine may affect them. The effect of loud bangs, explosions and flashing lights from fireworks can be sufficiently distressing and cause long-term behavioural problems, and in some cases leave them with an ongoing sensitivity towards noise.

Demand for action on recent dog attacks on horses
Written by MyPetFriends
Sunday, 31 October 2010
horse_and_dog.jpgThe British Horse Society is calling for police action following recent reports of attacks by dogs on horses and riders.
-
The attacks are often extremely serious, causing extensive injuries and even proving fatal in some cases.
-
In Aberdeen earlier this month, a 27-year-old Arab mare was the victim of a vicious attack by a Staffordshire bull terrier. Her 52-year-old owner was also injured as she fought to free her horse from the dog’s jaws. The mare sustained facial injuries so severe that vets were unable to treat them, leading to an infection of the bloodstream. The mare was subsequently euthanised.

Black cats are ultimate evil accessory this Halloween
Written by MyPetFriends
Wednesday, 27 October 2010

cats_eyes.jpgIf the approach of Halloween is bringing out your dark side or a secret desire for world domination then a black cat is the ultimate accessory for you, according to a poll by The Blue Cross, one of the UK’s leading animal charities.
-

The online survey revealed that 60% of people would choose a cat as their perfect pet if they were a witch, wizard or evil mastermind – perhaps due to the influence of devious film characters like Mr Bigglesworth, Dr Evil’s cat in the Austin Powers films, who voters picked as the most evil of all fictional cats.
-

Black cats clawed their way to the top of the tree with over 76% of people picking them as their cat colour of choice for a career in spell casting or evil mastery.

The scheme, which was launched earlier this year, aims to match privately owned horses which need rehoming with owners looking for a new horse.

Due to a change in personal circumstances, Allie’s owner Emily was faced with the difficult decision of having to rehome him. After contacting the BHS for advice Emily decided to register Allie on to the scheme

Written by MyPetFriends
Sunday, 24 October 2010

dancing_dogs.jpgVeterinary associations have strongly welcomed moves to tighten up the rules on dog breeding in Wales with the publication of the proposed Animal Welfare (Breeding of Dogs) (Wales) Regulations 2011.
-

The draft proposals follow a report by an expert Task and Finish Group, including veterinary representatives, which made recommendations for new legislation to tackle the significant problem of puppy farming.
-

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) and British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) were both represented on the Task and Finish Group and have welcomed the proposals, which include:
-

• tightening the thresholds where a dog breeding licence is required;
• a staff-to-dog ratio of one person to care for a maximum of 20 adult animals;
• compulsory microchipping of dogs on licensed breeding premises;
• the need for behaviour and socialisation of animals to be taken account of in the licensing requirements to meet the obligations in the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

Introducing new pets to each other
Written by MyPetFriends
Saturday, 23 October 2010
girl_with_pets.jpgWhen you acquire a new pet, be it a dog or a cat, it is important to make sure they will get along with any existing pets you already own. This will depend greatly on each pet’s separate personalities, and as an owner you should already have an idea if your existing pet is one that will accept newcomers readily in a social situation.
-
Both dogs and cats may view any new additions to the family as a threat, and you should be extra careful when you leave them alone with each other to begin with, as fights may break out as one tries to show the other who is boss in their new partnership. Some pets may be naturally friendly to each other, and some may be naturally aggressive. While you are trying to establish how well they will both get on, you should make sure that they are both supervised when socialising for the first time.

Pet IQ test is your pet a genius
Written by MyPetFriends
Thursday, 14 October 2010

academic_dog.jpgNew research from Petplan reveals that Britain is a nation of genuine canine and feline Einstein’s with over 40% of people claiming they own a clever pet and almost another 5% branding their animal a ‘genius’. In fact, some people even claim their pet is smarter than their human companions, with almost one in five claiming that their pet is smarter than some of their friends.  As a result, Petplan is launching an IQ test for owners to calculate their pet’s IQ with support from Dr Deborah Wells, a leading psychologist in pet behaviour.
-

Whilst some pet owners struggle to differentiate between a gifted pet and an obedient one, Petplan’s IQ Test will help pet owners know how intelligent they really are.
