Vets Welcome Extension to UK Pet Travel Protection |

The European Parliament has voted 618 votes to 17 for an extension to the transitional arrangements contained within the regulation on the non-commercial movement of pet animals (Reg. 998/2003) which afford the UK additional protection against rabies, ticks and tapeworms.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) and British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) have been lobbying MEPs to support the extension and have strongly welcomed this decision.

British Riding Clubs kick off their 2010 Championships this April with the National Animal Feed (NAF) Superflex Novice Indoor Show Jumping and the NAF Magic Winter Dressage Championships.

Sponsored by Natural Animal Feeds, the Championships will take place at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire over the Easter weekend of 3 and 4 April 2010.

Support for Government Scheme to Make Microchips Compulsory |

Healthy Pets Insurance, the leading online pet insurer is backing a recent government report to make microchips compulsory for all dogs in England and Wales. The measures set out by the home secretary, Alan Johnson, are to address the growing concern of dangerous dogs in our communities and “status dogs” being used for intimidation. The RSPCA saw a 12-fold increase in the number of complaints about dog fights between 2004 and 2008. Johnson is expected to give further details of the scheme in a speech on crime and antisocial behaviour.

As the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) reaches its 10th anniversary on 28th February 2010, the British Veterinary Association (BVA) and British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) are advising pet owners to talk to their vets about the vaccinations and other treatments their animals will need to travel overseas and return to the UK.

In his speech to the British Veterinary Association's London dinner, BVA President Professor Bill Reilly renewed calls on the Government to increase the fees for Official Veterinarians (OVs) – private practice vets who undertake work on behalf of the Government, such as TB testing, vaccinating, and on-farm work in the event of a notifiable disease outbreak.

Pet Insurance Specialist Healthy Pets is backing the US Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) recent call for preservation for an open internet.

The FCC opposes plans by some of the worlds largest ISPs to back a proposed idea for a tiered system of data travel, in which bandwidth heavy traffic, such as video streaming, will travel slower.
