Parents are being warned not to buy hamsters or other exotic animals as pets because they can carry potentially deadly germs. Exotic pets may be more prone than cats and dogs to bite and scratch, putting children younger than five particular risk.

Hot on the heels of Pedigree who pulled a lucrative £1.5 million sponsorship deal, the Pets Dispensary for Sick Animals has followed suit. The PDSA said it was withdrawing from all Kennel Club events over unacceptable breeding practices and health issues affecting some pedigree dog breeds.

A vet from Guernsey, who was continuously being asked about cat flap design and functionality, launched a revolutionary one of his own. The cat flap has a unique selling feature – it synchronises with a cat’s existing microchip number to selectively control access through the cat flap. This intelligent cat flap is called the Pet Porte Microchip Cat Flap from Pet Porte Ltd. It was the first time that microchips were used in conjunction with cat flaps and the product has already been winning awards.
