Do you know if your rabbits are healthy and happy
Written by MyPetFriends
Saturday, 28 May 2011

rabbits.jpgDid you know that guinea pigs don’t make good companions for rabbits? Do you know why muesli-style dry food is bad for your rabbit?
-

As a contribution to Rabbit Awareness Week (23 – 29 May) the British Veterinary Association Animal Welfare Foundation (BVA AWF) is launching a new leaflet which looks at a range of elements to help owners through the process of improving the life of their pet rabbit.
-

The recent PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report found that of the UK’s 1.6 million rabbits many live in hutches that are too small, lack the right nutrition, are lonely, bored and in need of mental stimulation, and many also suffer from illnesses such as dental disease and flystrike.
-

BVA AWF Chairman of Trustees, Carl Padgett, said:
-

“With rabbits amongst the most popular pets in the UK we set out to create a simple educational guide for owners of these lovely companions. Sadly vets are seeing more and more rabbit husbandry problems and we are concerned about their welfare needs. Perhaps the most neglected requirement of all is the need for companionship for these very social animals.”

Cats Hide Symptoms More Than Dogs
Written by MyPetFriends
Friday, 20 May 2011

cats in basket.jpgNo matter how frequently some conditions are seen, there is nearly always scope for carrying out a faster, smarter and more cost-effective clinical work-up, BVA Congress delegates will be told in a series of BSAVA sponsored talks at the annual BVA Congress in London, September 22-24
-

The BSAVA has drawn up a high quality CPD programme to complement the political debates at BVA’s annual meeting, with lectures from leading specialists from university and private referral centres. They will be focussing on feline medicine, on gastrointestinal medicine/surgery, and on cardiorespiratory medicine, explains Professor Ian Ramsey, of the University of Glasgow veterinary school, who drafted the menu.
-

The one thing that these three disparate areas of practice have in common is that they provide a constant challenge to the clinical skills of general practitioners in small animal and mixed practices. So his idea in choosing the speakers was to look at disciplines in which efforts to improve and refresh clinical knowledge will have immediate applications in providing a better service to clients, Prof. Ramsey explains.

horse with children.jpgThe British Horse Society is encouraging riders and carriage drivers throughout the UK to hold an equestrian event to mark BHS Access Week (May 20-30)
-
The Society’s Access Week is a time for BHS staff, volunteers and members to hold events to raise awareness of equestrian access issues. There are many ways to get involved, with local bridleways groups and BHS committees running various activities throughout the ten days. National events are promoted on the BHS website,
www.bhs.org.uk.
-
A popular option for those wishing to raise funds for the Access Fighting Fund is the BHS Ride for Access scheme – now into its fourth year. A fun, sociable way of raising money for the BHS, and getting together with other riders in your area, Rides for Access is a great opportunity for riders to enjoy current routes and preserve equestrian routes for the future. A Ride for Access pack is available from the BHS which contains everything you require to organise and publicise your event.

Vets Focus On Rabies Prevention for World Veterinary Day
Written by MyPetFriends
Thursday, 28 April 2011

dog growl 2.jpgWorld Veterinary Day (WVD) takes place annually on the last Saturday of April and this year veterinary professionals from around the world join together on April 30 to raise awareness of the profession’s role in rabies prevention and control.
-

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) created World Veterinary Day in 2000 as an annual celebration of the veterinary profession.  The WVA, World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) have joined forces to promote this year’s theme of rabies prevention.
-

Rabies remains one of the most serious viral zoonoses presently encountered worldwide.  Despite being 100 per cent preventable, it is estimated that 55,000 people die worldwide from rabies each year, approximately one person every ten minutes: half are children under the age of 15.

Heat warning to pet owners
Written by MyPetFriends
Tuesday, 19 April 2011

dog sunglasses.jpgOK, its only April and we have been reminded that this time a few years ago, many parts of the UK had only just come out of a cold spell that left us snow covered, but the temperature is increasing so remember to look out for your pets.
-

The usual advice applies and many now know this, but just by way of reminder ensure your pet is indoors in a cool/shady place during the hottest part of the day – usually 11-3; has access to plenty of fresh water and is not left in a hot car, van or a conservatory.
