Companion Care Vets bonfire night advice
Written by MyPetFriends
Tuesday, 12 October 2010

firework.jpgAs we are approaching that time of the year again when we “remember remember the 5th of November” the team at Companion Care Vets offer some handy tips on preparing your dog for the loud bangs and flashes that come with fireworks.
-

It is important to start thinking about desensitising your dog more than one or two days before fireworks night. Many pets are successfully helped through desensitisation and sound-bites are available that simulate the random and unpredictable noises of fireworks. It should be played in the weeks leading up to the firework season, gradually building up the volume and length of time it is played. Your pet will then gradually become used to the noises and begin to ignore them.

Cat Vaccinations
Written by MyPetFriends
Saturday, 02 October 2010

cats_in_basket.jpgIf you are a cat owner, then it is imperative that you get your cat vaccinated. After an initial course of vaccines, you should then remember to visit your vet every year for booster injections. Exact costs will vary from practitioner to practitioner, so you may want to shop around for the best price before making any appointment. However, it is important that you, as a responsible owner, do get your cat vaccinated otherwise you are leaving them open to a number of different diseases that can adversely affect their health.

World Rabies Day Awareness is the Best Defence
Written by MyPetFriends
Thursday, 16 September 2010

happy_vets.jpgSeptember 28, 2010 marks the fourth World Rabies Day.  This annual event, led by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, provides a unique platform for individuals and organisations to raise awareness and understanding about the importance of rabies prevention.
-

Rabies remains one of the most serious viral zoonoses presently encountered worldwide.  Despite being 100 per cent preventable, it is estimated that 55,000 people die worldwide from rabies each year, approximately one person every ten minutes: half are children under the age of 15.
-

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is proud to support World Rabies Day by once again urging UK veterinary surgeons to raise their staff and clients’ awareness of the implications of rabies when they travel abroad.  The BVA Overseas Group has produced some simple advice, available on the BVA website, on reducing the risk of contracting the disease, which gives guidance on vaccination and wound cleansing.

Household Pet Fleas
Written by MyPetFriends
Thursday, 09 September 2010

dog_flea.jpgFleas are a common problem amongst household pets, and they can cause some serious health issues if they are not kept under control. Whilst we always recommend purchasing a solution such as Frontline for your cat or dog, it is important to remember to de-flea the home they live in as well, as they can live in carpets, sofas and bedding.
-

All it takes is for one flea to either jump onto you or your pet, and if unchecked, soon your whole house will become infested with them. A full blown flea infestation is not easy to get rid of, but by following our handy tips, you should manage to eradicate them after a bit of trial and error.

Warning against pet heatstroke dangers
Written by MyPetFriends
Monday, 06 September 2010

dogs_on_rocks.jpgWith summertime in full swing, and although the sun hasn’t shined as much as we may have liked, it is important to remember that your pets can feel the heat just as much as you can. In this humid weather, dog owners in particular need to make sure that their canine companions are not left in cars for long periods of time with no access to ventilation or cool water.
-
Whilst temperatures remain warm, the interior of a car is a potential hazard for dogs, as the windows and metal chassis turn your car into a mobile greenhouse. Each year the news reports that more careless owners have unwittingly caused harm to their pets by leaving them in the car whilst they have gone shopping, and come back to find their loved ones have passed away from dehydration. This could have been easily avoided if a little more care had been taken on the owner’s part.

Your Pets Diet
Written by MyPetFriends
Tuesday, 31 August 2010

dog_and_cat_eating.jpgThe health of your cat or dog is closely linked to their diet and the food you give them to eat. Whilst you must be careful not to overfeed them, you should also make sure that you given them plenty of food to suit their appetite and not underfeed them. Your pet has its own individual appetite, and you should govern their food intake based upon three factors – their size, age and how much energy they burn up each day. In addition, how much food they consume can also be affected by how tasty their diet is and individual feeding patterns.

girl_with_pets.jpgThe British Veterinary Association, some of the UK’s largest animal charities, law enforcement agencies and unions have today jointly called on the leaders of the main political parties to work together to introduce improved and updated legislation to protect dog welfare and public safety.

The 20 groups have come together to demand action against irresponsible dog owners by the Government and the provision of necessary resources for those tasked with policing dog control laws.
-

It comes ahead of the summary of responses from Defra’s consultation on dog legislation which is expected this autumn. The consultation received more than 4,000 responses by the time it closed in June, indicating the scale of interest in the subject.
