Cats Protection’s current Volunteer of the Year, Sharyn Wood, is hoping that Volunteers Week inspires more cat-loving people to join the charity.
-
Sharyn was the overall winner of the charity’s first-ever Volunteer of the Year Awards, held in 2008, after leading the charity’s Arbroath and District branch to find homes for an impressive 350 cats during 2007.
-
She now hopes more people will use Volunteers Week (1-7 June) as their opportunity to join Cats Protection’s 7,000 volunteers who play a crucial role in helping the charity to help 157,000 cats and kittens each year.
-
Sharyn said: “The achievements of the Arbroath branch are due to dedicated volunteers who are united by their desire to help unwanted cats. Finding a home for each and every cat gives us a sense of satisfaction as well as the occasional surprise! Last year, we found a home for a stray cat called Wallace, and he later made news headlines by saving his owner from a potential house fire. Hearing stories like this make us feel proud of what we do.”
-
Carol Carbine, Cats Protection’s Volunteering Manager, said: “The charity has 252 volunteer-run branches just like Arbroath, all helping cats in need. There are many diverse roles on offer – including fostering cats, home visiting, fundraising and much more so why not use Volunteers Week as your cue to contact the charity and see if there is a role that interests you?”
-
There is also time left to take part in Cats Protection’s Volunteer of the Year Awards 2009, before the closing date of 19 June. Anyone who feels that a particular Cats Protection volunteer deserves special recognition can nominate them for one or more of the following awards - Bright Ideas, Flying the Flag, Unsung Hero, Extra Mile and/or Distinguished Service.
-
Entries will be judged by Cats Protection, and the winners of each category – as well as the Volunteer of the Year 2009 – will be announced at a ceremony at Cats Protection’s National Cat Centre in Sussex on 19 September! To enter, please visit http://www.cats.org.uk/newsandevents/volunteer_awards.asp where an entry form can be completed online, or printed out and posted back to the charity.
