Dubbed as the ultimate fish-out-of-water tale, RATATOUILLE, the fantastic new movie from Disney Pixar, tells the tale of a rat named Remy who dreams of becoming a great chef despite his family’s wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. The animated film has been warmly received by children - and rat owners alike – giving these pets a brand new lease of life and warming the hearts of those who previously disliked rats.
-
Even though the movie hasn’t made its way across from the US yet, the interest in rats is noticeable – if you haven’t seen the merchandising yet, you won’t have to wait long because the Disney Pixar marketing team are working flat out to ensure that this film makes it onto your list of must-see movies this year. But the interest in keeping rats as pets has also been on the rise (remember the increase in interest in Pigs when ‘Babe’ hit our screens a few years ago…). Sales of rats in pet shops have already increased by over a third in some UK pet stores.
-
Tim Plant, a My Pet Friends member who owns two pet rats, got in touch with us and told us that “Rats make wonderful pets – and do not deserve the bad press and looks of horror they receive from the public. In fact, nobody likes wild rats; but a good pet rat can be the ideal pet for both adults and children. They’re easy to keep and affordable.”
-
If you’re thinking of keeping a rat, here are a few things you’ll need to know:

• You can buy young rats from pet shops, ratteries or from a private sale.
• Choose a rat that is relaxed when handled, but is still lively and energetic.
• It should look physically healthy – no discharge from its eyes and ears; and no flaky skin etc.
• Rats can survive for 2-3 years
• They are nocturnal so will be more lively at night
-
As is the rule when deciding to take on any pet, learn more about your pet before purchasing it and remember it’s a life that you’re taking on so make sure you are committed to its care.
-
Directed by Brad Bird, Ratatouille will hit UK cinemas later this month.
