But, it's not your usual cat or dog, it's a Sugar Glider – a species of possum native to Australia and New Guinea. With cute big brown eyes, fluffy fur, sticky up ears and amazing acrobatics; many are seeing sugar gliders, as the ideal pet. However, they require a lot of attention.
-
Gliders eat fruit, vegetables and leadbeaters – a mix of warm water, honey, boiled eggs, baby cereal and vitamin supplements, and can live up to ten years in captivity. They need a large cage filled with toys and places to hide, as well time to bond with their owners.
-
In Australia it is illegal to keep sugar gliders. They make noises similar to that produced by an electric blender, and also make barking and chirping sounds. Their name comes from their sweet tooth, they enjoy feeding on the sugary sap of eucalyptus trees in the wild. They also crave attention to such an extent that if they are ignored by their owners they can become depressed and can die of loneliness
