If you’ve ever lost a pet you’ll understand how upsetting and unbearable the loss can be, and new research shows that for many Britons its like losing a beloved relative or parent.
-
Research from leading pet insurance firm More than, revealed that more than half of the respondents in their survey of over 1300 British dog and cat lovers said the event was equally as heartbreaking as losing a close family member such as an aunt, uncle or grand parent. A third went further comparing it to the death or a parent, sibling or spouse.
-
More than a quarter of all owners also said that they were so grief-stricken by the death of their pet that they were forced to call in sick to work. The survey found that on average bereaved owners cost the UK economy £895million last year in days off work. They also found that cat and dog owners spend an average of £72 each putting their beloved pet to rest. A quarter have their loyal companions cremated, eight per cent create a shrine or hold a human-style funeral for the animal, while five per cent build a 'pet coffin' to bury them in.
