Feel in the need of a duvet day, want to do a spot of shopping, or fancy a spot of self pampering or a day in front of the telly? Well if you do, don’t use your pet to pull a sickie – they’re onto you.
-
According to research from insurance company More th>n, around 400,000 workers a year claim they can't go into work because their pet is sick. And this rises in the summer when workers want to make the most of the good weather.
-
The phenomenon has been dubbed Slowcombe Syndrome, after Mrs Slocombe from the 1970s hit comedy Are You Being Served? The cult character was notorious for using her sick pussy(cat) as an excuse to get out of work.
-
The statistics reveal that two thirds of bosses (59%) say they are extremely suspicious of pet-related excuses. Londoners were most likely and Geordies are the least likely to use their pets as an excuse to take time off.
-
But as responsible pet owners, we’re sure you wouldn’t use your pet as an excuse – especially because the day may come when you genuinely need to have a day off to look after your pet; and you know what they say about the boy who cried wolf…
