rabbits.jpgMyxomatosis is a disease commonly associated with wild rabbits, but insect bites can transmit this to pet rabbits, leading to a long and painful death.  The number of domestic rabbits infected with the virus has increased, and many veterinary practices across the UK have seen an increase in the number of pet rabbits with the infection.

Myxomatosis infection leads to symptoms, including listlessness and anorexia as well as swelling of the rabbits’ heads eyelids and genitals.
-

Vets recommend vaccination for pet rabbits that are kept in rural areas, and who may come in contact with wild rabbits.  The vaccine costs around £30, and can reduce death in infected rabbits.  Rabbit owners are also reminded to keep dogs away from rabbits, especially dogs who liked to hunt rabbits in the wild.

I just want to back this article whole heartedly. I have a rabbit that had myxy in 2007 and he has outlived his two brothers who didn't get it. It is an awful way for a rabbit to die, so please, please, please get yours done, it is definately worth it. I think that £30 is a bit much, I have had it at a couple of places for around £12.
