Pet owners take care with natural remedies PDF Print E-mail

With a growth in the interest and use of natural and alternative remedies people forget just how powerful and dangerous they can be.
-
None so more than a Lichfield pet owner who applied tea tree oil to an open wound on their eleven year old Dalmatian pet Poppet. The dog had suffered a cut when playing in a field near her home, so her concerned owner decided to apply tea tree oil to the cut. Having successfully used natural remedies before the owner did not realise that they may have an adverse affect – in this case, causing her pet Dalmatian to fit.

-

Tea tree oil is widely used for its natural anti-septic qualities, and is widely sold as an ingredient in pet products in pet shops and online pet stores. However, when applied in a neat and highly concentrated solution it can cause severe reactions.
-
Fortunately Poppy is fine, but Sandra a veterinary nurse from Leeds informed My Pet Friends that “owners should always seek appropriate advice from their vets practice before giving any new medication to their pet – if people are worried about costs, they need not be, a quick chat on the telephone doesn’t cost anything.”
