Pet lizards are becoming an increasingly popular choice family pet; however, caution has been raised over the safety of pet lizards around young children following a two-month-old baby, catching salmonella from their pet lizard.
-
The baby from Widnes, Cheshire, received special treatment in hospital before returning home to recover. The family had to pet reptiles, a bearded dragon lizard and a corn snake. It was the dragon lizard that carried the salmonella bacteria.
-
Children under five are at greater risk of catching salmonella, as well as pregnant women and the elderly, because they have weaker immune systems. Reptiles are known carriers of salmonella, and anyone considering keeping such exotic pests should carefully consider the potential risk to vulnerable family members.
