Its always difficult when a pet dies, as the founders of the My Pet Friends site recently found out when their own dog Pepsi passed away a few weeks ago, but as humans we have others around us who can help us get over the sadness that such a loss causes. However, what if your pet outlives you? That’s exactly what happened to Fred the African grey parrot whose owner passed away leaving him distraught and entering a deep depression.
-
Fred was so upset that he ended up biting off all his neck feathers and would sit on his perch in a ‘low mood’ bobbing his head up and down. This led animal experts to adopt drastic measures – he’s been prescribed an animal friendly version of the bird friendly version of Prozac, called Clomicalm.
-
Its not a new phenomenon and pharmaceutical companies have noticed a rise in demand for antidepressants for animals. But is this the best option for pets who may be sad? Julie Parkin, a Reiki master from Norwich told My Pet Friends about a therapy that has shown to provide great benefits over drug therapy:
-
“Reiki is a Japanese system of natural healing that promotes healing by laying a healer’s hands on the person or animal. Many pet owners find that Reiki can provide some relief to their pet’s ailments such as depression. It’s a gentle treatment that costs around £15 for an hour session. But owners can do this themselves after some training, this touch also helps strengthen the bond between pet and owner.”
