Despite an increase in warnings over the problems of overweight pets, a survey on behalf of the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) suggests that Nine out of 10 pet owners are unconcerned about their animals’ size.
-
More than 2100 UK households were surveyed and 62% of dog owners and 72% of cat owners believe they could do little or nothing about their pets’ weight. Moreover, eight out of 10 owners believed their pet was the correct weight.
-
In the survey, owners were shown pictures of animals of varying weights. Just 33% of dog owners and 23% of cat owners said their animal resembles the normal weight image.
-
Comments and responses from My Pet Friends’ readers to previous articles on the issue of pet obesity and pet overweight issues concur that the majority of owners prefer chunky pets as they see them as more cuddly and cute. However, this research suggests that pet owners may not understand what is a slightly overweight pets compared to an obese pet - an issue that may have an impact on the health and welfare of their pets and could be fatal.
