The editorial news team at my pet friends have reported many cases of overweight dogs, overweight cats and other overweight pets over the past few months – but now its official. Almost half of Britain's dogs are overweight.
-
More than four out of every 10 cats and dogs seen by UK vets are overweight, according to researchers who carried out a survey of a hundred veterinary surgeons across the country. The research shows that there is also a weight problem amongst cats, with 19 per cent of them being classified as obese, and 20 per cent considered slightly overweight, giving a total of 39 per cent which are overweight.
In addition to health problems, Sainsbury's finance report warns that treating medical conditions suffered by cats and dogs linked to being overweight increases the cost of ownership as a vet fees and medication costs increase.

Owners think they are being kind to their pet by giving them treats, but being overweight can influence and worsen medical conditions in pets, such as osteoarthritis and respiratory disorders. General overweight can also be very uncomfortable for the animal.
-
Pet insurance providers argue that pet owners have a duty of care to their animal and if reasonable health care has not been taken to prevent the animal becoming overweight, owners could potentially invalidate their insurance.
