Researchers in Germany have found that having a furry pet at home whilst young people are growing up could reduce their chances of developing allergies.

The study looked at 9,000 children aged six and under and found that having a pet dog made you less sensitive to the causes of allergies like asthma, eczema and hay fever. The theory is that if you have a furry pet you are exposed to germs on the animal’s fur at an early stage and therefore your body gradually learns to cope with these germs and develops a stronger immune system to fight against them.

Interestingly, the effect was not seen in children who had frequent contact with dogs but did not have one at home.

If after reading this article you have been encouraged to get a cat or a dog – please read Kitty and Teddy’s pet care tips page on looking after pets and getting your first pet; speak to other pet owners or chat to staff in your local pet store. Be a responsible pet owner and give this duty full and careful consideration – as Kitty and Teddy remind us “a pet is a life - not a toy or a fashion accessory.”
