A survey carried out by animal insurer, Petplan, has revealed that vets are surgically removing some very unusual items from our pets. The list of foreign objects recovered from the nation’s cats and dogs includes: kebab skewers, razor blades, socks and underwear along with more unusual items such as a bag of nails, a firework and a doll’s head.

When Ozzie the Staffie found himself backed into a corner during a play fight with another dog over a rubber duck – he had no option – swallow it or lose it!
-
Adam Townsend from Cubbington, Leamington Spa, took dog Ozzie to Avonvale Veterinary Hospital in Warwick after witnessing his pooch downing the children’s toy in one. Adam said: “He swallowed the duck whole. I just couldn’t believe my eyes. Although at first Ozzie seemed unaffected by the incident, he soon began vomiting. So I rushed him to the vet.”
-
Surgeon Emily Burton said: “The duck must have begun to irritate Ozzie’s stomach lining and, due to its shape, he would not have been able to pass it back out on his own. This could have been very serious as the stomach would have been blocked and continued vomiting would have led to him becoming dangerously dehydrated. We operated to remove the duck and Ozzie was back to his usual energetic self in no time.”

Alison Andrew, marketing manager at Petplan says: "Claims for vet fees associated with surgically removing objects from pets can cost from just a few hundred pounds to several thousand depending on the complexity of the surgery. Luckily, Ozzie is insured with us as very few owners have money set aside to pay a bill of this size.”
Vet Hannah Ferguson, who followed up Ozzie’s treatment, said: “It’s not uncommon for dogs to swallow strange objects, although they tend to chew them into little bits first. Ozzie’s is certainly the most entertaining x-ray we’ve ever seen!”
