With Valentines Day just around the corner, why not take a trip to Cats Protection to find your purr-fect partner and banish those Valentine’s blues?

A recent study, carried out for the UK’s largest cat charity, showed that owning a cat can have a positive effect on those feeling downhearted, miserable and tense at this time of year.
-
The research was carried out over five years and explored the psychological stress suffered by cat owners and non-cat owners during January and February. Feelings of being miserable and downhearted were 28% greater in non-cat owners while feeling tense or unable to relax was 34% greater in non-cat owners.
-
Psychologist Dr June McNicholas, who conducted the research, explained: “Pets can provide many of the functions of supportive human relationships, acting as valuable providers of social support during times of anxiety or stress.”
-
Director of Veterinary Services for Cats Protection, Maggie Roberts, added: “There are many reasons why cats can help. They are not judgemental and they have modest needs which can provide owners with a sense of purpose and they are also great fun to play or interact with.”

Pootle is just one of the many cats waiting to be rehomed at Cats Protection’s National Cat Adoption Centre in Sussex. Pootle is 19 years old, but young at heart. Sadly, her previous owners had to move away and could not take her with them. All she is looking for is somebody who will take her home and shower her with boundless love and affection, as she enters retirement!
If you want to bring some love into your life and do something really special this Valentines Day, please consider offering a cat like Pootle a loving new home.
-
With a national network of 252 volunteer-run branches and 29 adoption centres, the charity is bound to have your perfect feline companion so please call Cats Protection’s national Helpline on 08702 099 099 or visit www.cats.org.uk to find out more about adopting a cat.
