The British Horse Society is calling for police action following recent reports of attacks by dogs on horses and riders. - The attacks are often extremely serious, causing extensive injuries and even proving fatal in some cases. - In Aberdeen earlier this month, a 27-year-old Arab mare was the victim of a vicious attack by a Staffordshire bull terrier. Her 52-year-old owner was also injured as she fought to free her horse from the dog’s jaws. The mare sustained facial injuries so severe that vets were unable to treat them, leading to an infection of the bloodstream. The mare was subsequently euthanised. - In another incident two Rhodesian Ridgebacks charged at a 10-year-old cob riding along a public bridleway. The horse broke into a gallop, turning sharply, causing the rider to fall. The dogs continued to pursue the horse, which was seen fleeing down a B-class road with the consequent obvious danger to itself and others. The rider was admitted to hospital for two days to assess kidney damage as a result of the attack. - In a further incident on 27 September, two horses were attacked in Dulwich Park in London. One rider fell off as their horse fled with the dog attached to its chest. The horse suffered extensive tear injuries to its chest area, requiring stitching and staples. The rider suffered a back injury. - The British Horse Society’s Director of Access, Safety and Welfare, Mark Weston, said: “The Society is receiving more and more reports of such attacks and it is imperative that the police prosecute irresponsible dog owners to make people realise that such actions are a serious criminal offence, the results of which can be horrific for both horse and rider.” - The British Horse Society will soon launch a website where incidents such as theses can be reported, but urges all equestrians to report such attacks via its website, www.bhs.org.uk, and also to the police. - Check out the great deals we're offering in partnership with leading pet insurance companies and online pet stores.
