Pet owners know that their pets are special; they provide comfort and care and provide love and support to get us through the difficult times in our lives. But Oscar, a nursing home cat in Providence, Rhode Island (USA) is there until the end – his behaviour suggests he can predict when residents will die. - Oscar curls up to patients during their final hours, and staff who have noticed this phenomenon, now call family members once he has chosen someone. The staff say that it’s not distressing for family members as many take some solace from it, appreciating the companionship that the cat provides for their dying loved one. - Oscar grew up in a dementia unit at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre which treats people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other illnesses. He was adopted as a kitten and since his arrival has been doing his own rounds sniffing and observing patients, and then sitting beside those who would end up dying in a few hours. - Pet owners reading this article will know that their pets do seem to understand when they are feeling down or get a sense of when things aren’t quite right. In films and TV dramas, it’s often the pet that has a ‘sense’ that something isn’t quite right, or senses something that we humans can’t. A pet’s senses such as sight (e.g. night vision), hearing, smell and taste are a lot more sensitive than human’s, so could it be true that pets are able to tune into their sixth senses and hold ESP or clairvoyant powers? - Whatever the truth, if you live at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre, I wonder what goes through your mind when the resident cat decides to lie down next to you… - {moscomment} |
