Pet news stories over the past year have increasingly been dominated with stories about our pets health - in particular, that of rising obesity levels. The Campaign for Real Pet Food, which is launched today, wants pet food manufacturers to be forced by law to list all ingredients on their packaging so that owners know what they are feeding their pets.
-
European laws do not require pet food manufacturers to declare what is in their products. Instead, packaging can use generic terms such as meat and animal derivatives, cereals, derivatives of vegetable origin and EC permitted additives. The campaign organiser suggests that these additives have shown a substantial rise in cases of problems caused by poor diet, including allergies and intolerances, and behavioural issues linked to artificial additives in food.

In an ideal world, pets would be fed fresh natural meals. However, the My Pet Friends editorial team fear, that with the increasing credit crunch and pet owners need to cut costs at such a time, cheaper food will be demanded from manufacturers, and this will result in more additives been included in food. Tell us what you think, by adding a comment to this article, or by showing your thoughts in the pet chat forum.
