As food prices increase, people up and down the UK are choosing to keep a couple chickens, or more, in their own back gardens for a fresh supply of eggs – but they make great pets too. Whether you choose a designer, brightly coloured plastic coup or a more traditional wooden and chicken wire pen; chickens are really easy to keep and only require a small amount of space to run around in and a nice comfortable coup for a bed at night.

To help people get their first pet chicken, the Scottish branch of the Battery Hen Welfare Trust has bought 628 battery chickens from various battery farms across Scotland and saved them from being killed. They are giving them away in exchange for a small donation.
-
Battery chicken facts: an estimated 20 million hens are in cages. After they stop laying as many eggs, many are sold for pet food. Figures indicate that 66% of eggs bought in Britain still come from battery hens. The Trust aims to reduce this to at least 30% by 2012.
