dog_excercise.jpgBritain's pet charity, The Blue Cross is challenging animal loving Londoners to lace up their trainers and get fit while helping pets by taking part in this year's Royal Parks Foundation half marathon on Sunday 11 October.
 -
Since its launch last year, The Royal Parks half marathon has fast become one of the Capital's most prestigious running events, attracting thousands of runners.  Starting and finishing in Hyde Park, the route takes in the beauty of some of London's natural treasures, including St James's Park, Green Park and Kensington Gardens, passing famous landmarks, such as Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye.
  -
At last year's event more than 120 Blue Cross runners galloped, scurried and hopped their way to the finish line, throwing a lifeline to the sick and homeless pets that are cared for by the charity.  Christine Dobbin, a veterinary nurse from Fulham was one of many runners who donned animal ears and noses along the half marathon route to show their support. She said: "I jumped at the chance to do this for The Blue Cross as they do so much for animals, but I had never taken part in any sort of running event so it was a real challenge. It was a great achievement to complete the half marathon and run past all the London sites on the day."
  -
As one of the principle partners, The Blue Cross has a limited number of charity running places available to those who sign up to raise sponsorship to help the animals in its care.
The Blue Cross provides essential care for thousands of sick and homeless animals at its animal hospitals and veterinary mobile clinics in London, and relies entirely on public donations and fundraising events like this to continue its work.
  -
All Blue Cross runners will be provided with a pack containing practical tips and training advice as well as plenty of fundraising ideas. On the day of the race, Blue Cross runners will be invited to a post race reception in Hyde Park where they can enjoy a soothing massage and celebrate with friends and family.
  -
The Blue Cross will also provide its runners with plenty of advice for those who want to train with their dogs in the lead up to the race, although dogs are not allowed to take part in the race itself.
