...or to match the sofa. Yes, are the UK population really that fickle and choosing their pet to match their sofa or décor? Well, they are according to leading animal charity the Dogs Trust who list this as one of the most irresponsible reasons people have given for abandoning their dogs.
-
The charity coined the term – a dog is for life, and not just for Christmas – over three decades ago and since doing so, the number of dogs given as Christmas presents has fallen. To help reduce this even further, the Trust has announced that it will not be rehoming dogs over the holiday season.

Many rescue centres have noticed a high number of strays and lost animals being brought to them. The increase can be attributed to the credit crunch as well as new laws which have led to fewer owners being reunited with their lost dogs. Under the clean neighbourhoods and environment act, stray dogs will be the responsibility of local authorities, whereas previously they were taken to the police. This means many owners do not know where to find their lost dogs.
