A pet may be fun to play with and be around, but before you rush out to the nearest pet shop and buy yourself a new puppy, there are several important questions that you need to consider before you make any long-term commitments….

How much responsibility do I want?
Different pets come with different responsibilities, and thus this will affect the amount of time and attention you will have to give them. A dog or a cat will require more of an effort to keep than a bird or fish would. Your local pet shop will be able to advise you on what you need to do to look after a pet, and you should be prepared to make sacrifices to look after them based upon what you are told.
-
Is my house or flat suitable for a pet?
The size of your house or flat will play an important role when it comes to choosing the right pet for you. A small flat may not be ideal for a large dog, and if this is the case, it would be more sensible to choose a cat or smaller animal. You should also consider the climate you live in, as particular breeds of dog or cat are very susceptible to extremely hot or cold climates. Specialist advice should be taken from your vet or pet shop before purchasing.

What character of pet would I like?
This is an important question to ask, as your pets character needs to fit in with the type of pet you are looking for. Some pets are lively and full of energy, whilst others are more relaxed and subdued. You may end up with a playful dog, when really you were looking to own a guard dog. You should take time to research what character your pet will have, otherwise you may well end up with a pet that you don’t really want.
